Why do you need the DELE A2 for nationality?

Since October 15, 2015, Spanish legislation requires that applicants for nationality by residence demonstrate a minimum knowledge of Spanish equivalent to level A2 of the CEFR. This rule affects citizens of countries where Spanish is not an official language.

The DELE A2 issued by the Instituto Cervantes is the certificate that directly satisfies this requirement without dispute before the Ministry of Justice.

Who needs the DELE A2 for nationality?

You need the DELE A2 if:

• You are a citizen of a country where Spanish is not an official language
• You are applying for Spanish nationality by residence
• You do not have a diploma from studies conducted in Spanish (primary, secondary, or university in a Spanish-speaking country)

You do not need the DELE A2 if you are a national of a Spanish-speaking country (Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, etc.), if you studied in Spanish, or if you already have a DELE of any level (A2 or higher).

The complete process: from DELE A2 to nationality

Step 1: Pass the DELE A2

Register for a session at the Instituto Cervantes. The exam evaluates reading comprehension, listening, written expression, and oral expression. You need a 60% in each block. Results are published 2-3 months after the exam.

Step 2: Pass the CCSE test

In addition to the DELE A2, you need to pass the CCSE test (Constitutional and Sociocultural Knowledge of Spain). There are 25 multiple-choice questions about the Constitution, organization of the State, culture, and Spanish society. You pass with 15 correct answers (60%).

The CCSE test can be taken on the same day as the DELE A2 in many centers, or in a different session.

Step 3: Gather the documentation

Once you have both certificates (DELE A2 + CCSE), you will need:

• Criminal record certificate from your country of origin (apostilled)
• Certificate of registration
• Birth certificate (apostilled and translated if necessary)
• Valid NIE/TIE
• Proof of financial means
• Fee of €104 (model 790, code 026)

Step 4: Submit the application

The application is submitted electronically through the electronic headquarters of the Ministry of Justice. You will need a digital certificate or cl@ve to access.

Step 5: Wait for the resolution

The legal timeframe is 1 year, but in practice, it can take between 1 and 3 years depending on the workload of the Ministry. Once approved, you will have 180 days to swear or promise the Constitution before the Civil Registry.

Additionally, you must add the lawyer's fees if you decide to hire one (between €500 and €1,500 depending on the case).

Can I present a level higher than A2?

Yes. Any DELE (A2, B1, B2, C1, C2) meets the requirement. If you already have a B1 or higher, you do not need to take the A2 exam. Many people opt directly for the B1 as it opens more job opportunities, but if your goal is solely nationality, the A2 is sufficient and more accessible.

Does the DELE A2 expire?

No. The DELE diploma has permanent and indefinite validity. Once passed, you can use it for the nationality application regardless of how much time has passed since you obtained it.

In many examination centers, it is indeed possible to register for both tests on the same day. Check with your local center for availability.

What happens if I fail the DELE A2?

You can retake it in the next session without limit on attempts. There is no penalty for failing. You simply pay the fee again and try again.

Can I use another Spanish certificate other than the DELE?

No for nationality. The Ministry of Justice only accepts the DELE issued by the Instituto Cervantes. Other certificates (SIELE, certificates from language schools, EOI) are not valid for this specific procedure.

How much time do I have to present the DELE after passing it?

There is no deadline. Since the diploma does not expire, you can pass it today and use it for nationality within 5 or 10 years without any problem.
